Jeff Handlin

Biography at a Glance

Jeff is the founder and president of Oread Capital & Development, a Denver-based company that has acquired, developed and managed some of the largest and most successful master planned communities in the Denver and Boulder markets. Prior to founding Oread Capital & Development, he served in executive roles at recognized national homebuilding and real estate development companies including: founding partner of Starwood Land Ventures; officer and national vice president for M.D.C. Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Richmond American Homes; and vice president with Taylor Woodrow (now known as Taylor Morrison).

At M.D.C. Holdings, Jeff managed all land matters and personnel company-wide, representing over 12,000 residential lots across the U.S. between 2009 and 2011, with acquisition costs over $600 million. Also while at M.D.C., he led the acquisition of SDC Homes, at the time the third-largest homebuilder in the Seattle market. Beginning in 2007, prior to his time at M.D.C., Jeff was a founding partner in Starwood Land Ventures, based in Bradenton, Florida. He led all Florida activity while at Starwood Land, representing over $100 million in direct acquisitions, including the acquisition of substantially all the Florida assets of Tousa-Engle Homes from its bankruptcy estate.

Upon receiving a JD from Duke University, and prior to his work as a land development and homebuilding executive, Jeff began his legal career at the law firm of Carlton Fields in Tampa, Florida, where he focused on real estate development, finance and homeowners association law. He graduated cum laude with a BA from the University of Kansas.

Jeff is a member of ULI’s National Community Development Council and ULI’s Colorado Community Development Council. He strongly supports education, and in that regard: guest lectures at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado, serves as an adjunct instructor at the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver, and serves as chair of the Honors Program Advisory Board at the University of Kansas.
